GameStop has announced its intent to compete in the digital distribution market after acquiring Spawn Labs and Impulse, Inc. this afternoon. GameStop’s commercial reach, combined with Spawn and Impulse’s ability to deliver to the digital marketplace, could turn this retailer into a serious contender on the virtual front- a team that could very well challenge the reign of distributors like Steam and Direct 2 Drive.

GameStop plans to make high-definition games available on “any Internet-enabled device,” but the exact means have yet to be seen. The company expects to put the plan into motion over the next three months, though the acquisition negations don’t officially close until May 2011.
