In their latest developer diary, id Software said that RAGE was arguably the best looking game on consoles.  As can be expected, gamer reactions were decidedly mixed about such a statement.

However, it just so happens that RipTen had a chance to speak with id’s creative director Tim Willits recently, and he answered our questions about how they got RAGE to look so damn good on consoles:

So, there you have it.  The answer to every question about RAGE and id Software is… John Carmack.

Actually, the answer is the awesome technology behind the new id Tech 5 engine… but you probably already knew that.

Stay tuned to RipTen for continued coverage of RAGE and all things id.

    Well… I already knew that… and really it’s 100% the truth. Dude’s a ‘God amongst men’ as I like to say :P

  2. The 360 version will always be superior not because the 360 console is better, but because the stupid PS3 controller sucks

    • ROFL. The same can be said for the PS3 version. Especially since the 360 controller is one of the worst controllers out. The king of horrible controllers is still with Nintendo with 360 slightly better. The PS controller is the best design. Button layout, ergonomics and function are all spot on. Why the hell would anyone want to hold the controller at an angle to use both sticks?

      • Um you don’t hold the 360 controller on an angle though…

And the PS1 controller that had rumble/then didn’t/then had it again is so 1996. Time to develop a new controller.

        • I have both consoles. 360 I find more comfortable – mainly because of the sticks but also because of the triggers. No concave triggers on the ps3 pads was a silly non ergonomic move. Just like no rumble.

          • The Ps3 is better for fighters – its legacy is from pre- first person shooters. The 360 might have an edge on shooters.

          • Theres a 360 Troll is every artical…Trying to convince me the 360 is best…sorry for your wasted time troll, but it never works!

          • it seems the only troll here is you. i have both consoles and a hi end pc.
remember back in 2005, you,ve passed an entire year opening wide your mouthes and then the delaystation came with those horrible ps2-like games. i got some even worse news now. as your sheppard said you are on mid cicle of the ps3 and soon m$ will jump nextgen, and looking to all those dx11 games on pc. soon you´ll be sh****g on yourselves for a long period. kisses.
by the way i am a ps3 seller after gt5´s release

      • Actually, Carmack is fond of pointing out that rocketry isn’t a science, it’s applied engineering. Which is totally something a rocket scientist would say.

    • No he didn’t, he’s technical director but does spend a lot of time coding on the inner workings of the engine, but there are other engine programmers at iD aswell.

I think his last solo engine was Doom, since Quake he’s gotten help from other programmer gods, Mike Abrash for instance.

  3. I cry whenever I remember this game has no competitive multiplayer outside cars.  This used to be a must buy for me but now I probably won’t get it just because I’m a multiplayer guy.  It sure looks incredible though.

  4. Sounds like a lot of hype. Looks like a non-cell shaded version of Borderlands & hooray, you’ve got vehicles! Bethesda should fucking follow suit, yet I bet Rage is less than half the game Fallout 3 is. Congratulations on the open world w/vehicles idea. You’ve finally stepped to the level all the real developers were @ 5-10 years ago. It didn’t take you that long to copy Valves gravity gun, why did it take so long to copy the rest of the industry w/open worlds?

  8. It looks good because it’s short as hell, there’s barely any post processing or lighting effects and the textures have to load every time you turn your damn head. Not worth it, if you ask me.
