It’s all over the internet and the gaming websites: Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3? EA and Activision have been trading blows with each other for months now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop until the year’s out.  Two juggernaut franchises vying for top shooter.  Meanwhile, gamers are expected to spend $74 Billion this year and it’s safe to say that gaming is socially accepted.  So who will win? Battlefield 3 will put up one hell of a fight, but Modern Warfare 3 will win. Not because it’s a better game, but because it’s casual enough for anyone to play.

Call of Duty 4 and every game in the series since have had an incredibly successful formula.  Star with a very glitzy, exciting, and cinematic single player campaign, then throw in a fast paced and solid, back-to-basics multiplayer mode (until recently).  Today, Call of Duty’s single player is more or less a camera controlled by you, the player.  Play the game and see how few shots you really need to fire, it’s saddening, yet it works.  Most people wouldn’t notice it, those people being “casual gamers”.  Yet, the single player “experience” is so polished and exciting looking that no one notices that the levels are incredibly linear, dull, feature very little “gameplay” at all – just scripted events.  As for the multiplayer, you have powerful guns (all of them) that have very low recoil and great accuracy.  So, you can inflict a lot of damage quickly thus downing your target quickly.  If you’re good at cover and know how to use “health regen”, then you can take a lot of damage as well and still recover.  Hell, even shooting from the hip is commonplace and works just fine as well.  In fact,  there are very few consequences for any of your actions unless you’re incredibly foolhardy.  Add to this perks, perks and more perks and you have a fun and simple game that passes the time easily.

Pew Pew Pew

Lets face it though, we really only buy Call of Duty for the multiplayer.  Better yet, the games can also be run on almost any computer and ports to all the consoles easily, even the Wii!  The reason being is that they’ve been using a heavily modified Quake 3 engine since Call of Duty 2.  So, each year it’s pretty much the same game, just with better graphics.  While the game brings little in terms of gameplay innovation or physics, it can still maintain a decent amount of eye candy and, of course, solid frame rates on all platforms.  Better yet, Call of Duty’s multiplayer also has little to no team work, even in the actual team based modes.  So, just about anyone can play and do well by themselves and come out satisfied when playing CoD.  So, since the formula ain’t broken – Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t look to be changing anything.

However, my first time playing Battlefield 2 was horrendous -I hated it. I didn’t understand how the game was playing out and I was infuriated that when I shot at people it did little damage or didn’t seem to register at all. At first I blamed my internet connection. Damn Lag! Yet, it wasn’t until after a friend showed me how to actually play the game that I opened my mind and learned that Battlefield is a complex beast. Outside of Bad Company and the upcoming Battlefield 3, there was little single player experience to be had, so we’ll ignore the Bad Company’s for now.

Fact:  Battlefield’s gun play is more realistic than Call of Duty.

Recoil matters, you cannot spray and pray, you have to aim and fire in controlled bursts.  Not to mention that the newest Frostbite engines have bullet drop, so now the player must aim high for distance shots and expect them to do less damage. With the new physics and destruction, Battlefield damn near redefines the first person shooter. The player can now change the map entirely by destroying environments. With vehicles, the entire game is changed in how you approach your objectives.  Battlefield also utilizes classes, along with perks and upgrades for the levels per class and the game modes also require teamwork to be successful. The Bad Company spin offs attempted to reach out to casual gamers by making the gameplay faster paced and more simple like CoD.  It had no prone, four basic classes, and no Commanders or squad leaders… less tactics if you will. Battlefield 3 will be doing some of that, but at its core it will still be a large team based and tactical shooter.  Far more hardcore than CoD.

Innovation - You Can Has

What does all this mean? Quite frankly, from my experience, Battlefield is too complicated to overthrow Call of Duty. Any Battlefield veteran can point out someone who is either new to the game or a Call of Duty player.  They’ll usually start by calling everyone hackers and complaining a lot.  Battlefield’s best attempt at single player has been Bad Company and Bad Company 2. The characters were great, better than Call of Duty’s in fact. However, the over the top cinematic experience of CoD wasn’t there (Battlefield went with gameplay), and the gunplay was similar to the multi-player – much more complicated than it’s Call of Duty counterpart.

I personally found Bad Company 2 to be overly simplified for a Battlefield game, yet I thought it was still complex enough to hold my attention. Online, it had a simpler class system that was pretty well balanced – yet it just didn’t have the excitement that Call of Duty had.  Battlefield has a learning curve, not a necessarily high one, but it’s there. Call of Duty has next to no learning curve, anyone can jump in and play. There is nothing to learn with Call of Duty, there are no game mechanics to understand – just know what the kill streak chain is and you’ll do fine. Call of Duty is more open to casual gamers and is more polished as what it is than Battlefield.  This goes far beyond console vs console vs PC, this is challenging gameplay vs first person camera dolly and simplified run and gun multiplayer.

We're Not So Different... You And I...

Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3.  I don’t doubt that one bit.  Battlefield 3 should sell extremely well and could convert some Call of Duty players over, but only if EA knows how to market the better engine, the vehicles and the different type of gameplay. Perhaps, if Battlefield 3 does well enough, the next Battlefield game will over throw the next Call of Duty game.  One can only hope.  Ultimately, it would serve Battlefield 3 better if they and EA stopped comparing themselves to Call of Duty.

If gamers want to play Call of Duty, they’ll buy Call of Duty, not Battlefield 3.

Are you looking forward to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 or both?  I’m personally looking forward to the PC version of Battlefield 3 – but which do you think will come out on top?  Does it even matter…?

  1. BATTLEFIELD 3 for PC.

Heres my input on the matter. (This is coming from an alltime Call of duty fan since the very first on PC, as well as every single battlefield game since the first.)

Call of duty has sold out, any true original COD fan will agree with that.

COD will sell better, but that doesnt mean its a better game.   Lets compare Volvo to Bentley, More people would buy a volvo but it doesnt mean its better than the bentley. (Yes i understand there is a price difference.)

But face it, Tactical is more fun, nobody wants to play a game by themselves, plus it doesnt feel real.

Battlefield 3 game of the year.

  2. DING. This article points out the most important reason as to why Call of Duty is so popular.

You can Call of Duty stupid, mindnumbing, whatever…but at the end of the day it will triumph as the more popular game FOR THIS REASON.

Did it ever occur to some of the Battlefield fanboys that maybe some people don’t give a shit about a S00PER C0MPLEX SH00T3R WITH ULTRA REALISTIC GAMEPLAY!!!11!!1 and just want to have some run and gun fun by themselves?

The ONLY comparison between CoD and Battlefield is that they are both first person shooters.

Other than that, they are completely different.

If you realize this, then you know that there is no point in saying one is better than the other.

If you don’t, then you’ll continue to bash the other for no good reason whatsoever.

    • “The ONLY comparison between CoD and Battlefield is that they are both first person shooters.

You just proved how to be really stupid… both fps but completely different, go figure? lol

  3. BF > CoD.. CoD is for noobs, and BF is for skilled players. That being said, I do play both and prefer Battlefield. Im in the BF3 Alpha and its amazing.

    • I know one that has a suger mama and gets laid at least once a night, oh and shes hot.  sadly it’s my buddy.  His only complaint?  she won’t let him go ballz deep…

    • Yup, you need to have your nuts 100% filled to get the best headshots around…

while other people “N00bs” they get killed 12 times, they shutdown the console and they go screw/creampie their cute girlfriends like “no -tomorrow” to end up smoking or going out to the movies or have an icecream, nightime – fresh air only to get laid again by dawn, get up very late, probly by noon to find out the guy that shot him is still getting a lot of perfect headshots O.o.

  4. mw is for kids bc is for adults.  they target different agegroups, although both playable hands down bc has the   effect.

  5. I’m going to make one simple point. Battlefield games take a bit to adjust to, but once you adapt you are enjoying a true quality game. That’s exactly why the people who are saying they will enjoy both, such as the poster of this article, are people who mainly play Call of Duty. I dont mean to be combatitive on this concept, but everyone can equally agree Battlefield 3 is going to be a better game in one way or another. The only thing theyre all finding themselves separated on is the fact that they are good at one and bad at the other. That’s just preference and it’s totally fine. But that’s also the reason most Call of Duty gamers are saying, for once, “I want to get Battlefield 3. That’s looking like a great game so far.” And for those of you that have had a true Battlefield experience, you’re thinking “Wow, I can’t wait for Battlefield 3! Fuck Call of Duty.” So there’s one thing I’d say that absolutely everyone can agree on. Dice is doing a good job so far. If they’ve been at least able to make all gamers want to try, thats the first step in their goal.

    • I mainly play CoD, I am looking forward to both but I am also pretty good at both series, so I think you got it the other way around. People who say CoD>BF or BF>CoD just suck at the one they say is worse. Here is an example for my BFBC2 stats (only one I have bookmarked) http://bfbcs.com/stats_360/SHADY520 where I stopped playing after the first two weeks and traded it out, plus at the time I had a crappy DSL connection with 1.5mbs down and 700kbs up since I live in a rural area and they had horrible servers upon release. For CoD it varies as MW2 my k/d and w/l seems about 1.4 but in BLOPS both are above 2 which I think it is because I got better internet before it came out.

      • see i say BF>CoD, but i’m good at both. before i owned BC2 i played MW2 and my k/d was around 1.3-1.4 with my highest killstreak being 37 (went 81-5 that game, without camping lol). now in BC2, i’ve put almost 300 hours into the game, i’m level 40, i have a k/d of 1.37 (my average in most shooters hovers around 1.20). and i get about maybe 3000 points per game, average. so pretty much better stats in CoD, but i started to hate that game and now i’m a Battlefield…i’d say supporter. lol

  7. I have never liked playing online, mostly kids with bad attitudes. I have been gaming since the original DOOM and DUKE NUKEM and QUAKE. I’ve played all the COD’s that came out for the pc along with MOH. I like single player campaign. I didn’t like Battlefield because it was strictly online. Now battlefield 3 has single player, so I’m stoked. I will get and play both. I’ve played most of the FPS’s, FEAR, FEAR2, FEAR3, Crysis, Crysis2, Far Cry, Far Cry 2, Half Life 2, Halo, Timeshift, Area 51, DOOM 3, First to Fight and Wolfenstein.

  9. I will be buying BF3 on PC and XBOX. MW3 on XBOX. Why? Well I have played BF2 since January 2006 and the game was based around team work, tactics, and medics (lol). BF3 won’t outsell MW3 on consoles, but we all know MW3 on PC won’t have good numbers. (I mean as in BF3 will have more people on the game then MW3 itself.

  11. Both games provide the same “thrill of the kill” in slightly varying ways… So yes both FPS’s are similar but ultimately the same end result. lots of Frags.

  13. BF3 too hard core? give me a fucking break. It’s just as watered down and simple as COD. try playing ARMA 2  or Red Orchestra. i.e. real fps games.

  14. Ok I’ve read a lot of comments now.. all I gotta say is keep it apart, the article is mostly true, apart from the point of no teamwork un Cod. I’ve played cod4 promod for so long with a ton of teams so tactics matter I’m Cod if you want.. its just that the Casual trend they invented with mw2 ruined the teamplay. As for bf I play it like it is Cod with engineer.. easy to rush like Cod, hardly any recoil, but its still alpha so whatever. I’ll buy both regardless.

  15. Dick head cod is a better game EA are not so much of a good gaming group for shoot em ups anyway. Cod is more realistic because it takes less rounds to kill as does a real gun and if you think battlefield is better you should compare how long CoD has been running in top market and how long battlefield has. People only really noticed battlefield after the wwII games of it. Face it EA wont steal Activisions spotlight. Have you noticed how game shops all over the country have been advertising mw3. just cus you and your friend cant face the facts COD RULES OVER SHITTY BATTLEFIELD

    • you just explained why CoD has been at the top: because it is heavily advertised. Activision puts more money into advertising the series than actually making it. and in full body armor, you aren’t going to die in 3-4 bullets. even with a standard kevlar vest. maybe one shot with a sniper, yes, depending on where you get hit. in Battlefield, weapons do variable damage depending on the type of round the weapon uses and where it hits the opponent. and not every shot is going to hit where you aim when there’s actual realistic recoil. the slightest moves during full auto fire result in a massive variation in where the bullets hit. and at longer distances, bullets lose their velocity and power. granted it is a bit exaggerated in Battlefield, but it’s simple physics nonetheless. and people started noticing Battlefield when Call of Duty started to get stale, and when the Bad Company series came to consoles. and if you think sales make a game better, you have extremely low standards

  16. Have you even played alpha?

Powerful guns? They’re taking the same route with call of duty now.

Might as well call it camperfield 3 – prone edition. 3 shots to kill, everyone goes prone, everyone plays recon.

Lame ass game yet you’re calling it something “amazing”. It’s no better than modern warfare 2.

Face it, the fanboys just want something new in their lives but they’ve never played the game.

Mark my words, battlefield 3 will either suck like medal of honor (Swedish developers) or get a mediocore score like bad company 2.

Leave it to the Canadians to make a good game, EA CANADA.

  17. Please you retards are too stupid to play bf3, it the most realistic piece of work out there and the most detail. Mw3 is unrealistic gun sound, horrible graphics and unrealistic looking gun attachments and killstreaks in general are completely stupid.

  18. EA has NEVER compared themselves to Call of Duty… everyone else does… and the only reason it should and the same reason it shouldn’t is because BATTLEFIELD 3 SHITS ON CALL OF DUTY

  19. all cod games are good for are bad servers hacks  cheats and fucking laggy multiplayer battlefield 3 will be better its the one game that i have never had any lag or problems shootong ppl plus no gay perks like last chance

  20. the only thing i like about call of duty series is the singleplayer way more cinematic than battlefield series singleplayer but multiplayer on the other hand call of duty is the most unrealistic game i have seen in this generation (maybe second) the gameplay is always the same no mechanics at all just run and gun , battlefield has varity in gameplay u can ride vehicles and the game is based on team work not like call of duty lone wolf only gameplay , but call of duty is probably will sell more.

  23. Whoever wrote this isnt very smart…They gave the impression that because BF2 guns did LESS damage, theyre MORE realistic?? That makes no sense… In reality, If you get shot by ANY rifle, you go down, even if your hit in the leg or arm.

  25. lmao dude wake up cuzz most of ur grievences with BF r BS i know enough ppl that r sick of COD and its kiddie BS with ppl jumping and shooting and making actual combat a jk, to say it wont surpass COD cuzz its too complicated is as stupid as assuming that the Gran Turismo franchise won’t surpass the need for speed franchise when they were neck and neck hindsight shows us that it is foolish to think that as ppl get used to a genre they look to challange themselves i for one will be pre-ordering battlefield 3 and make fun of any of my friends that waste their money on a new cod when like u said it they haven’t changed much might as well buy mw2 and save some money lol

  26. Yes, Modern Warfare 3 will sell more than BF 3, but you must remember that Quality does not equal quantity. I believe Battlefield will be the better game, as its always been.

  27.  “Not because it’s a better game, but because it’s casual enough for anyone to play.”

This is hands down the dumbest quote I have ever read. Is there a startup screen that causes the console to shut down if someone isn’t “hardcore” or something?

    • you obviously didn’t understand what they were saying in the article. CoD is such a casual game that anyone can pick up the controller and be decent at it, which is why so many prepubescent children play the game, or people who don’t play shooters or games very often and just want something quick and simple

  28. Even though I play bad company 2 on console which I know is a dumbed down version of the PC game I still find it heaps better than any COD game. For me the only reason I play COD is for the singleplayer experience or if i’m playing split screen with my friends.

  29. some mofo broke into my house a week or 2 ago and stole my ps3:(
so ill have to save some money first before i can play these 2 awsome games!

  30. So … what your really trying to say is you don’t like Quake? That’s the reason I love CoD: it’s really just Quake. I want my video games like I want my OS, the same as before (as in from the 70s) and fast. That’s Quake. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

  31. Call of Duty haters your opinions are null and void. Call of Duty is a great game, you just hate the hype. Without the hype though, its a decent game on its own…and more so on multiplayer. You can whine and complain all you want. But those are the facts, and all your hating wont change that. So save your breath, give it a rest, and get a life.

  32. Haha so basically COD players think they are hardcore FPS players when they’re no better than Bejeweled players =) Loving it. Its no surprise that most people will go easy mode with COD and its better for me because then I know all the crappy players will be playing COD while I can enjoy Bf3 with some good team players and opposition.

  33. 1.  Battlefield won’t beat Modern Warfare 3 in sales.  The previous numbers CLEARLY show that.
    2.  Battlefield is the better game for the better gamer and NOT for the casual gamer.  Not everyone can be an uber FPS player.
    3.  COD games are for the masses and revolve entirely around gimmicks and narcissistic perks.
    4.  Battlefield players rip all over COD players.

    Signed,
    a Call of Duty player

  34. I will buy Battlefield 3 for PS3 for sure. In Call of Duty you cannot drive tanks, helicopters, war planes and many other vehicles. And Battlefield doesn’t have that ‘paper’ gameplay, where you can run, run and run.
Sorry for my bad english, I’m from Brazil.

  35. well i have a ps3, and iv already paid for BF3 and MW3, both will be very good, im not gunna choose a side cos well, both will be good lol, ppl need 2 stop comparing them, just enjoy them 4 what they are, good ol fun games lol

  39. I’ve played Battlefield 1942 and BF 2, but both not as much as CoD 2 (which is in my opinion the best) and CoD MW 2 probably the most.

I am really looking forward to get my hands on BF3, because of the vehicles and gameplay, CoD didn’t improve much, nothing new there since CoD 4 I suppose, so I’ll stay with my MW2 + the new BF 3!!

  40. bull… battlefeild is like nothing before, the gamers from cod that need more of a challenge are going to go to battlefeild, people want somthing new, modern warfare 3 is going to be exactly like mw2, nothing major is goin to change, so when there done with a refurbished mw2 there going to need that new adreline rush, the hair rasing 64 person bloodbath, or to get that epic sniper shot from across that map. the cod series after black ops is on a down fall. putting it simple, cod is slacking, and its were battlefeild can take the drivers seat.
