For those of you who thought Suckerpunch was just not empowering enough, developer Kung Fu Factory, the team behind Supremacy MMA, has partnered up with Microprose to give us one of the most stirring examples of female empowerment in recent gaming history.
Girl Fight is a game that pits strong, believable, non-stereotyped females (described as “an array of sexy fighters”) against each other in a battle for justice and equality. Characters in Girl Fight set out to escape from an evil corporation called The Foundation who have kidnapped them and forced them to do battle in a virtual reality environment.
I think I’m right to assume that the virtual reality represents the invisible bondage that women are held to in our online advertising culture, and The Foundation represents the patriarchal oppression women face every day in modern society through being casually objectified.
Here is a quote directly from Girl Fight’s press release that, I think, details the creative direction of the game quite well.
The higher mental development of woman, the less possible it is for her to meet a congenial male who will see in her, not only sex, but also the human being, the friend, the comrade and strong individuality, who cannot and ought not lose a single trait of her character. – Emma Goldman
Wait, no, that isn’t it. Sorry.
The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, “It’s a girl.” – Shirley Chisholm
That isn’t it either, hold on. This never happens to me, I swear.
Get Ready to Lick the Competition with Girl Fight, Coming Soon to Xbox LIVE Arcade and PSN. Take on the world’s most lethal and dangerous women in this digital arcade fighter from Microprose and Kung Fu Factory… Brutal. Deadly. Gorgeous. Veteran executive producer Microprose and developer Kung Fu Factory announced today that Girl Fight is coming to Xbox LIVE®Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®Network in spring later this year. With hair flying, long legs kicking and the ear-piercing shrill of deadly vixens, Girl Fight is a unique all-female, fast-paced spin on arcade-style fighting games.
There it is.
According to the release, Girl Fight is set to include numerous fighting styles, character options, unlockables and customization. That is in addition to the “ear-piercing shrill of deadly vixens”- obviously a strong selling point. I’d hazard a guess that there are multiple non-objectifying outfits, realistic breast physics that won’t be Gainaxing them at all, and just generally a good, respectable, mature time had by all.
No release date has been announced for
BlazBoobs Strip Fighter Misogyny Kombat Girl Fight, but we will surely have much more to say about this in the future. I suspect the female writers of our site are already quite excited about putting forth their opinions on this title.
