We got a tip from our friends at Joystiq that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the NES (you know… the one with that damned dam level) is no longer available on Nintendo’s Virtual Console service. Konami chalks the reason up to their license expiring, which is the same explanation that Ubisoft gave for Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled disappearing from the Xbox Live Arcade last year.

While it’s not news for games to be removed from the digital download service, the optimist in me has hope that this lends credence to that rumor about Rocksteady working on a TMNT game. Following their impressive, respectful and simply awe-inspiring work on Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, I’d love to see the studio take on the heroes on the half-shell (as we previously reported).

Of course, with a name like Rocksteady, could there be a more perfect fit?

  1. I wouldn’t think a Rocksteady deal would really have much effect one way or the other; Konami also has X-Men up, while that license belongs to Activision.

Anyway, here’s hoping that Nickelodeon renews some of these licenses, and maybe we can get more TMNT on Virtual Console– TMNT2, TMNT3, TMNT4, three different versions of Tournament Fighters, Hyperstone Heist, the Game Boy games… so much there to work with.
