Blizzard is “counting down the days” until they announce the release date of Diablo III.  To ensure the game doesn’t take any longer to hit the shelves, they have decided to drop PvP from the retail release.  Instead, the PVP aspect of the game will be added in as a patch at a later date.  While this isn’t the first time Blizzard has had to change their initial plans (see: StarCraft II), it is good news for those of us looking forward to the single player and co-op parts of the game.  PvP is being worked on, but the developer is not pleased with the current state of the content. As is the Blizzard way, it’s not getting released until the PvP meets the high standards that the developer has always strived to meet.

After a lot of consideration and discussion, we ultimately felt that delaying the whole game purely for PvP would just be punishing to everyone who’s waiting to enjoy the campaign and core solo/co-op content, all of which is just about complete.

I don’t suppose it’s out of the realm of possibility that a few of the 600 people being laid off could have made a bit of a difference in the progress of the PvP portion of the game. It does seem, though, to be more of the design aspects that are holding it up, not the actual programming.  We are close to finally playing the Diablo III release version (soon is relative), which is very exciting!  But what was a surprise about this story were reactions from the community.  Let us spend a little time looking at some of the best comments left by the fans, in their unedited glory.

Shakenjake:  Just announce a date Blizzbro’s! I feel bad for kids that have had to wait for this, grew up, and now their kids are waiting :_(. Curse you Blizzard! Super psyched for the game though, see y’all outside Best Buy 2 days before release!

Charlie: Counting down the days to announce the release date…? REALLY? What do we look like? This is BULL****!!!! Eat **** blizzard! Oh and for the record you can shove Diablo 3 up your *** I’m not buying it cuz this is stupid… And theirs that famous word again ”soon” if we keep listening to your crappy promises Diablo 3 might be released before the world ends..

rRashinToast: I WANNA PK PEOPLE, NO PVP? I HAVE LOST ALL FAITH IN BLIZZARD, AND DIABLO… !@#$ THIS SITE, %^-* THIS GAME, IM GOING TO GO PIRATE DIABLO 2, AND PK THE !@#$ OUT OF THE FIRST PERSON I SEE. THEN AFTER I QUIT, IM GOING TO GO PLAY ULTIMA ONLINE, CUS ITS 1000 TIMES BETTER THAN DIABLO 3. THNX A LOT BLIZZARD FOR BEING THE BIGGEST WASTE OF ENERGY GAME DEVELOPERS EVER. (MORONS).

bluewolf: “Jay Wilson is the inventor of disappointment. He once crushed the hopes of millions of people within the span of a few milliseconds”.

wolfpack: pvp will be on it just not ween it not ween u have the game i it wont the game to play i cant hold off pvp y i build mt toon 2 lv 60 and fram gear and see all the paly that not 1-1 1-2 is going to be nice

OrbitalBoy: Hey ‘wolfpack’ is that Protoss that you’re speaking, or are you on some crazy !@# experimental shiznickles?!

And there you have it, Blizzard fan rage never gets old.  There are a metric ton of fans supporting the choice that the legendary developer is making here, but that isn’t nearly as entertaining as looking at some of the… less stable posts.  Expect a release date from Blizzard soon™.

  1. Reading those comments has made me facepalm so hard that I’ve permanently got my hand’s imprint in my forehead.

Really though, commenters really have to show some restraint. It reflects poorly on gamers in general…

  2. these are typically the type of people that have never done anything remotely productive with their lives.  They have no idea how much work it takes to put out a good product.  Don’t get me wrong… This game is taking FOREVER. But in the end the only thing that matters is that it’s good.  (so long as I don’t die from old age first)

      • I totally disagree.  Since Diablo 1, PvP has always been a component of Diablo.  Those who claim it isn’t are completely wrong.  However, I don’t mind Blizzard adding PvP in at a later date because it will take some time for everyone to gear up and learn the mechanics of the game.  However, I am a little disappointed in Blizzard for taking so long to complete this game.  Clearly they’ve taken on too many projects at once, which is why they probably canceled Bliz Con this year.

        • PVP in Diablo has always been a gear-based shitfest. If you win, you either have better gear or you were able to quaff potions faster than the other guy. It has never been a meaningful thing in D1 or D2, for the sole reason that the game balances Players vs Environment, not other players. There’s not a whole lot of strategy in spamming a single skill and hoping you come out on top.

Furthermore, there has never been any competitive gaming league featuring D2, because the pro gaming community knows it’s a complete joke. Without some cohesive PvP system (arenas, etc), it never will be anything more — the devs seem to realize that. Kudos to Blizzard for not giving into these crying whelps.

  3. its on being delayed while they fix it, and will be released as a patch, i don’t really mind, its gonna take some time to build a sweet pvp character anyway

  5. I also have little to no interest in the PvP side of the game, so I take this as ‘positive news’ that the game will not be delayed further. Being a big diablo fan, and to a lesser extent a Blizzard fan (dabled in sc1 and WoW) I have to say that this wait is f$*king ridiculous. Not that Blizzard are good at meeting or even setting deadlines, but, come on. They are taking our heroin-like addiction to the Diablo franchise and dangling it within our reach, and everytime we think we might get a fix… BAM – it’s ripped away from us again. I remember about 10 years ago still playing D2 and planning on playing D3 in a few years, boy was I wrong. So many developments, delays, contributing factors blah blah blah JUST RELEASE IT ALREADY! PATCH IT LATER I DON’T CARE!

The problem is I am not the type who can ‘punish’ blizzard by not buying this game…. If it’s released in the next 2 weeks or the next 20 years I will still be forced to buy it. As I earlier compared it to heroin I am sure smack addicts have the same lack of control or will, knowing they should not lower themselves to that level but just needing that D3-like fix!

  6. they most likely bring out and expansion pack with pvp in it the only reason they took pvp out is the they can hurry up and release it if your moanig about this grow up and handle it losers

  7. I’m glad you picked the most MORONIC responses. If it isn’t ready, it isn’t ready. I know Blizzard will release a polished product. If they feel the PvP isn’t polished, then it is. Everyone is tired of waiting. So they intend to meet us half way. People will freak out but in the end they’ll buy it and make it the top selling game of all time (AGAIN). So let them throw the 3 year old temper tantrum. We’ll see them in line at the store and online in the game. They’ll play….everyone will.

  9. “Counting down the days”.   Watch me count, ready?

    365,364,363,362….

Blizzard has been very unprofessional in their handling of this product.  As such, I absolutely refuse to support this product.   There are a few viably alternatives coming up anyway.
