Okay, so the except for this article may have been a little misleading – Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has garnered reasonably favorable reviews since release and is by no means a failure. What Todd McFarlane, well known cartoonist, creator of Spawn and Executive Art Director on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was getting at with that quote was the risky strategy of releasing a single player RPG prior to the MMO which is still in the process of design.

In an interview with the folks at Up At Noon, McFarlane discusses a number of topics, with talk shifting to 38 Studios’ recent RPG and upcoming MMO at around the 11 minute mark.

“I remember telling Curt (Schilling, Founder and Chairman of 38 Studios)” says McFarlane. “You realize you’ve just doubled down your bat, cause if Reckoning comes out first before your MMO, which we’re still working on, and it lays an egg, I don’t understand what your marketing campaign is. From the mediocre game that nobody bought and doesn’t really like that much comes the big giant version of that!”

  1. Luckily for them it didn’t bomb. It’s the most enjoyable console RPG I’ve played in years, and one of the few that weren’t clunky on consoles. I’m not a fan of Skyrim or Oblivion’s first person style.
