Ben Harborne, the Associate Brand Manager of Sega recently teased the possiblity of a Skies of Arcadia and/or Shenmue port in an interview with Gamereactor UK.  Sega is already working on bringing Jet Set Radio to consoles through digital distribution.  Harborne stated that Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia are two fan favorites that they hear the most requests for.  To make this news even sweeter for fans of the series, the remakes might be in HD.  He had this to say:

Yes, definitely. I can tell you what’s it gonna be. It’s gonna be Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia as well. So those are the most requested games. I can’t say yes or no but we may be working on them.

It isn’t anything definitive yet, but I would imagine both will see a re-release at some point down the road.  I’m not sure how well Shenmue will hold up in the current gaming environment, but I can’t wait to dig into Skies of Arcadia again.

Both games were critical successes with moderate commercial success.  Shenmue was heralded as the second coming for video games.  While it was great, it did not change much in the way games are made.  Skies on the other hand, is one of the most under appreciated RPGs of the 2000’s.  After appearing on the failing Dreamcast Arcadia made its way to the Gamecube in 2003.

Shenmue is an ‘open’ world adventure focused on solving a mystery.  Much like an early version of L.A. Noire.  The fighting system was a mix of quicktime and light Virtua Fighter controls.  The title focused on the narrative, with action taking a back seat.

Skies of Arcadia is an RPG where players take the role of a band of sky-pirates.  Adventure is handled in a huge, floating world with traditional RPG combat.  The characters and story made the game a huge hit with fans,  or at least those that had a chance to play it.  Hopefully, we will see a release on the new consoles, and a whole new group of players can experience the world.
