An update launching for the PlayStation Vita later today will bring a free Skype application to the PlayStation Store for the handheld device. This version of Skype will include new features, including the ability to run in the background during gaming sessions. That means that while you’re playing a game, you can be talking to someone in the background. Alternatively, if you receive a call or a message while playing, the game will pause and give you the option to either respond to the call or message, or ignore it. The Vita’s Skype app will also be one of the few non-gaming apps that use the device’s 3G cellular radio. It will also feature SkypeOut, for dialing to landline and mobile numbers, if you’re one of those people who don’t have a cellphone on them at all times.
