Without knowing it, I became a fan of Drinkbox Studios thanks to its charming PlayStation Vita release, Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!!! As a Vita launch title, it came as one of the cheaper audiences but also one of the best, offering bite-sized, sidescrolling gameplay with a whimsical and often humorous aesthetic. And because of the team’s prior work, I’ve been loving everything I’ve seen so far of the upcoming title Guacamelee! (Drinkbox clearly loves its exclamation points), and now it looks like Sony will be the exclusive home of the game.
Set to release in early 2013, Guacamelee! will be released only on the PlayStation 3 and Vita as part of Sony’s Pub Fund program. For those unfamiliar with the program, Sony started the initiative in 2009 and last year pledged to spend $20 million on independent developers to craft games that have included PixelJunk Sidescroller and Papo & Yo over the next three years.
Guacamelee! will be shown off at E3 next week, so look forward to updated impressions on the promising Metroidvania action-platformer that will hopefully live up to the studio’s prior offerings. Drinkbox has released some new screenshots, which you can see below to get a feel for the great art style at work in the title. I’m excited to see more of the game in motion, as the mix of Metroid and Castlevania that has become its own genre is a favorite of mine. Combining it with the sensibilities of a studio that focuses on building solid mechanics and integrating a unique visual flair makes this one of the more promising looking downloadable titles set to hit the Sony platforms. And the cross-platform opportunity would be a great one to take advantage of – bundling the two together for PlayStation Plus members would be a great incentive and show Sony’s dedication to the systems’ connectivity.
Either way, look forward to Guacamelee!, and make sure to check out Drinkbox’s prior titles if they haven’t yet been on your radar.
