Bethesda has struck gold in recent years with the Elder Scrolls franchise, capping it off with the runaway success of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011. Throughout it’s five game run, this series has been an entirely single-player experience, with multiplayer never feeling like something the series needed. However, the success of MMORPG titles in recent years has made the online transition of the Elder Scrolls series seem inevitable, and now we have a first glimpse at what The Elder Scrolls Online has to offer. Developed by Bethesda and Zenimax Online Studios, the arrival of this game and the newly unveiled teaser trailer is bound to get the fans talking.

The premise of The Elder Scrolls Online takes the series back an entire millennium before the events in the other games in the series, taking place in the land of Tamriel. The storyline does not follow any other game in the Elder Scrolls series, though it does connect to events that occur much later in the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim story line. Daedric Prince Molag Bal is the main driving force of the game and he intends to take over the entire land, which gives you and your party motivation enough to stop him. Given that this is an MMORPG, playing in a party and working with others will be essential to success. Gameplay aspects found in other Elder Scrolls games, such as the fully explorable open world and the ability to join factions, will also be present here.

The teaser trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online runs just over one minute long and contains no actual gameplay footage, but it does show the Elder Scrolls staples such as the broad and expansive environments, the mix of human and non-human characters and the medieval fantasy setting. For those who are wary of the series making the online transition, this adherence to series conventions might come as some comfort. Aside from the fact that it’s coming out in 2013, no information regarding a release date has been announced. The game will be available on PC and Mac OS X, and as far as we know, there are no plans for a console release at this time.
