007 Legends is an upcoming first-person shooter being developed by Eurocom for Activision. Legends is set to feature a storyline that ties together five missions inspired by classic Bond flicks, plus a sixth based on the upcoming Skyfall film, which will be released as free DLC after the movie launches. When the game was first announced, Eurocom was tight-lipped about which Bond films the game would be centred around, but have since revealed two of the movies they’ll be focusing on.

The first, revealed last month to be Moonraker (Bond film #11), will see the player, as James Bond of course, attempting to stop the billionaire industrialist Hugo Drax from poisoning the world from his orbiting fortress. This particular mission will pit Bond against what is arguably the franchise’s most iconic henchman: Jaws.

The mission description given is as follows:

“Transporting aspiring secret agents to the well-known space port of billionaire industrialist, Hugo Drax, fans must rely on stealth and determine if they’ll trust and align with questionable allies to infiltrate the orbiting evil lair and defeat one of the most iconic Bond henchmen – Jaws.”

As you can see from the first screenshot, though, gunplay is definitely an option. Whether you start shooting things up once you land on the orbiting lair, or if you’re given the option of sneaking around or tearing up the place is unclear. It’s worth noting, though, that all the screenshots we’ve seen of the mission so far do depict Bond running around with his gun out, like below:

It doesn’t preclude the possibility of totally sneaky-stealth gameplay, but we have to go on what we’re given, here, so for the time being, I’m going to say that “relying on stealth” will only be a small part of the mission. I will mention that the trailer for the Moonraker mission, (which you can see at the bottom of the post), does include some brief glimpses of gadgetry, (a camera phone, for example. Much more impressive in the ’70’s, I think), so there will be a more covert aspect to the mission, but just how outright “stealthy” it will be remains to be seen.

Today, it was revealed that the second movie that Legends will be taking cues from is On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Based on the given description, this mission will be radically different in tone from the Moonraker mission:

“It’s here, in a picturesque Alpine setting, that gamers encounter an avalanche of action. Blofeld is aware of Bond’s undercover ruse and kidnaps Tracy, luring Bond into a rescue mission involving a fast-paced downhill ski chase and a confrontation in a high-flying cable car, which also uncovers Blofeld’s master plan to release a deadly virus in five of the world’s largest cities.”

From the sounds of it, this mission definitely has a more ‘climatic’ feel. I would expect pitched gunfights, ski chases, and a showoff in a cable car to occur nearer to the end of a Bond movie, whereas the sneaky, deceptive sort of mission should occur earlier in a story. I don’t know how closely the tone of the missions is going to relate to their position in the overall story, but it would definitely be cool if Eurocom developed the game to match the way a Bond movie would play out, with the action rising and falling before reaching one all-out, pitched battle for both Bond’s life, and the life of quite a lot of people who don’t even know their lives are being saved.

But, for any fans of the movies, this is definitely good news. Moonraker is one of my personal favourite Bond movies, and while I was never a huge fan of what’s-his-name Lazenby as James Bond (an opinion that, given that he starred in a total of one Bond movie, I’m assuming other people agree with), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was a decent enough flick. Now, if only they’d throw in a mission based around Thunderball, (my absolute favourite Bond film), I’d be happy. For now, you can content yourself with this trailer of the Moonraker mission, and rest easy in the knowledge that 007 Legends is set to release on October 16th for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
