We have extensively covered the development of Wasteland 2, the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic role-playing game being developed by inXile Entertainment and Obsidian Entertainment. Outside of having one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in the history of the site, director and designer Brian Fargo has also been releasing regular updates on the progress of the game. While Wasteland 2 is still in the early development stages, the first screenshot of the game has finally been released. Needless to say, fans and backers will be quite pleased with what is being shown here.
In the update released today, the eighteenth in total since the Kickstarter campaign launched, Fargo revealed more details on the progress of Wasteland 2. The team has been hard at work creating a series of varied locales and interesting gameplay scenarios, with the goal of providing a unique experience for each player. Along with this, the first screenshot was provided and it shows a richly detailed environment that really sells the post-apocalyptic look. Dust blowing over arid and cracked ground, burnt-out cars and an overall sense of desolation is what the screenshot conveys. This is a look that fans of Fallout and other similar games have become very familiar with.

The game is also presented in a third-person isometric view using the Unity engine. The detailing in the environments and characters looks great, especially for a game that isn’t far into development. Fargo himself noted that releasing a screenshot this early unusual for him, however fan demand and the collaborative nature of the project has compelled him to release this one image early. Fargo also stressed that this is only one locale that you will come across in the finished game, and the camera view is on the low end. The view can be ajusted to suit the preference of the player.
Also included in the update was some elaboration on the environment design by art director Koy Vanoteghem. In designing the environments, he acknowledged that the perception of what post-apocalyptic wastelands look like has changed over the years. The arid desert environments have become as staple, however Wasteland 2 will also incorporate locales where nature has reclaimed the landscape. Expect to see areas overgrown with lush vegetation, snowy terrain and a host of other unique environments. Another interesting point Vanoteghem made was about purchasing environmental assets, animations, models and textures from the Unity Store, a process he described as “painless”. The purchasing of these assets helps streamline the process for the relatively small team working on the game.
Wasteland 2 is tentatively scheduled for release in October 2013 on the PC platform.
