The appeal of RuneScape is very far reaching indeed. As the largest free-to-play MMORPG in history, as recognized by Guinness World Records, it boasts over 200 million accounts and legions of dedicated players, many of whom have been playing since the beta was released in 2001. Like all MMORPGs, it has experienced its share of highs and lows. The low points most notably being cheaters, gold farmers and people using bots to circumvent safety and security measures in the game. Another prevalent problem is account hijacking, which occurs when someone’s account is accessed without their knowledge or authorization. In an effort to curb this practice, developer Jagex has just announced a new security feature that should give players more peace of mind.

Simply called¬†Jagex Account Guardian (J.A.G), this new feature allows players to register their RuneScape account to a specific computer, similar to the authorization process that Apple currently employs with iTunes. When the game is played on the registered computer, it will continue to play as normal. However, when you (or someone else) attempts to log into your account from an unrecognized computer or device, additional steps taken to verify your identity will be required before you can fully log in. Jagex hasn’t revealed what these security measures will be, however the standard verification emails and security questions will likely be included. For the millions of users who have invested countless hours into RuneScape, the fallout from a compromised account is a very real, very frightening threat.

J.A.G. is free to use and it can be activated in your account settings page on the Runescape website. In addition to activating this feature, we recommend employing common sense when protecting your account. Using the same password as you do on multiple websites, sharing your login details and having a weak, easy to guess password are among he leading causes of account hijacking. Protecting your information, and utilizing the security tools available to you, will ensure that your endless hours spent grinding will not be in vain.
