Kickstarter is getting more and more popular these days, it seems. Obsidian Entertainment‘s Project Eternity campaign reached its $1,000,000 goal in a little over 24 hours and is still going strong (presently at over $2,250,000). Its success inspired other developers to propose their own projects, including two veterans of the industry: Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall, presently at Loot Droop. They are currently seeking funding via Kickstarter for an old school RPG, in the vein of masterworks of the ancient (gaming) times.

Who are they, you might ask? Brenda Brathwaite should be recognizable to anyone who likes classic RPGs, as the lead designer of the critically acclaimed Wizardry 8. She is also known for her work on the Realms of Arkania series (based on the German role playing game Das Schwarze Auge, The Dark Eye) and Jagged Alliance. Tom Hall should be even more recognizable, for his work as designer on the Commander Keen series and the quirky Anachronox role playing game, as well as tens of other titles too numerous to mention.

Their plan? To release an old school RPG. Built around a party of up to four characters, all created by the player, the game is slated to feature a complex, skill-based character system with different races and professions to choose from, a detailed fantasy world with at least five known NPC races, recruitable characters, hundreds of quests and multiple endings. Oh, and did we mention it will feature turn-based combat?

Stretch goals are set to make the game even more ambitious, offering an extended character system (with alignment, age, rank and randomly-rolled temperament), multiple beginnings (as in, endings in one game affect the beginnings in another, allowing the player to import their characters from one world to another), additional non-player character enemies that make the world much more dangerous (and come together with an expanded game area and new quests), as well as a super hardcore mode, with permanent death, iron man mode (no saves) and optional bosses.

The most interesting stretch goal is planned for the $1,900,000 stretch goal: if reached, Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall will make not one, but TWO different, separate RPGs with unique worlds, quests and characters.

Backers gain exclusive access to Loot Drop forums where both of the developers will chronicle every phase of the game’s development and ask for feedback on the game’s design.

Damn it, Kickstarter, just take all my money already. After I pay the bills for hospital visits after the Kickstarter video killed me. You can check out the pitch below and the project page here.

    • I believe that as people who made some of those classics, they are qualified to say what makes old school RPGs so good. And they are correct, when they say that modern RPGs are, well, pretty far from what these games originally were.
