Despite leaving the console market after the decline of the Dreamcast, the fanfare surrounding Sega still remains strong to this day. Now focused exclusively on software, the release of a new game is always an event for diehard fan. Well, for anyone visiting Sega’s Japanese website today, there is now a tantalizing teaser for an upcoming project. While nothing specific is known or is even being hinted at, there is plenty for fans to speculate over. Could this be a brand new IP or the return of a classic series, or perhaps some long-awaited sequel that fans have been hoping for? Let the speculation begin…

The teaser on the website is as ambiguous as it gets. Amidst a dark background, a stream of glowing sand/dust slowly falls into a pile on a patch of grass.  That’s all we get in the way of visual clues, and the grass can be hinting at anything from an RPG to a new entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.  However, we’re not left completely in the dark on all of the details. The webpage has a big “3.28” adorning the center, indicating that the reveal will be on March 28, 2013, and both the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita logos are present. The links to Twitter and Facebook will allow you to post the link on your respective pages, but there is nothing in the way of an official Sega page or any comments from the company itself. I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out what they have planned.

So what do you think Sega is planning? When I shared the link on my Facebook page and asked people’s thoughts, people speculated that it might be a new installment in the Sonic Adventure, Valkyria Chronicles, Panzer Dragoon or Phantasy Star Online series. Another possibility is an HD re-release of an existing Sega game, something that we’ve seen fairly recently with Nights Into Dreams… and Jet Set Radio. Some people thought way outside the box and suggested the Dreamcast 2 or another Yakuza game, while some greeted this teaser with a resounding “Meh.” At this point, it’s really anybody’s guess.

Check back on March 28, when we anticipate that all will be revealed. In the meantime, tell us you thoughts and place your bets in the comments section below…

  1. I would love it to be a new Shenmue, or even an HD update of the original (would really like to re-play that game on Vita!) but, for some reason, I’m thinking it’s a new Shining Force game. I’d have gone with Phantasy Star, but given that the Vita got PSO 2 only a couple of weeks ago, I think that’s unlikely.

  2. I could be wrong but i dont see how this can relate to sonic. Its been so long sonic has been on consoles and we expect the nxt announcement to be a major one. Sonic isnt exclusive to playstation and it will be on xbox wii u ps4 so i dont see this as sonic. Though it looks awesome

    • It hasn’t been a long time since Sonic hit consoles, the awesome Sonic Generations released just recently, with Colors right before it. Sure, Sonic isn’t exclusive to PlayStation, but for all we know it still could be a Sonic game.

I think it’s most likely Valkyria, though, or just more information on Phantasy Star Online 2 for North America. I’m hoping for Valkyria (or Panzer Dragoon), but PSO2 seems most likely.

  3. I think there’s a chance it could be Sonic. This time of year is usually the time a Sonic game’s announced. We really need a Sonic game on Vita. And hey, I remember Sega talking about a cancelled Sonic game for PS Vita. Maybe they’re continuing it for a PS Vita and PS3 release? When Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz was announced, I was weirded out by how Vita was the only system it was coming to considering Monkey Ball is usually Nintendo-exclusive (excluding the iOS games).

  4. I was thinking Sonic was most likely, with a Shenmue HD collection not being too implausible, but more than anything else I’d love either a new Valkyria game or a Panzer Dragoon title. Panzer Dragoon’s one of my all-time favorite series, and a Crossbuy/Crossplay Valkyria game would be glorious. Not sure which I’d prefer, but with my luck it’d just be a new Sonic game.

Then again, I’ve really enjoyed Generations and Colors(Wii version) looks nice, so it could work out really well.
